The hottest freelance skills in 2022
Freelance platform Upwork has been doing some data crunching and has uncovered the most in-demand freelance skills in 2022.
Before we dive in, let's start with a caveat. We like to look at the data objectively. In this report, Upwork has covered freelancing globally, and there are of course (and hopefully) some differences when we zoom in on the 43,094km2 that covers our pond.
However, the common denominator for global and local development is increasing digitalization - the fastest growing categories are Web Programming (43%) and Web Design (31%). But we also see a strong increase in the need to tell stories on social media, with Social Media Marketing as the third fastest growing year-on-year category at 25%.

The trend is moving towards high end freelancing
The big shift in freelancing brought about by the coronavirus is a move towards skilled freelancing. That is, freelancers who are experts in their niche, either through extensive higher education and/or topped with solid experience.
In the US, the great freelance revolution is partly driven by what's being called The Great Resignation. However, it hasn't quite reached Europe to the same extent, here we're "just" experiencing record demand for labor. (Hint: that means you as a freelancer are the one holding the really good cards).
One of the strongest drivers is also the industry's approach to keeping output up. If the required skills can't be found as a full-time employee, freelancers are looked to to fill the gap. If you want to be successful as a freelancer, you'll also be vigilant at the gate and offer your services here.
